Oral Surgery
- Extraction – because of pain:
Removal of a tooth that is badly decayed or has extensive periodontal
disease will get rid of pain. Because many of these types of extractions
require replacement of some kind, each instance of removal needs to be
carefully considered by the dentist and patient. Extraction is not a
reversible procedure.
Elective Extractions: Many times
orthodontists request removal of teeth because there is not space in the
jaw for the teeth to be properly aligned. Extractions are also often
recommended for third molars (wisdom teeth) because of a lack of space
and future problems with the remaining teeth because of the third molar
position. In special instances, like periodontal problems, dentists
recommend extraction of one tooth to protect a more valuable tooth.
