Prevention
Prevention of both tooth decay and periodontal
disease begins with the control of plaque and calculus. A prophy
or prophylactic cleaning of the teeth is really done to prevent periodontal
disease. A fluoride treatment is done to strengthen the tooth surface
and thereby reduce the number of cavities. Learning proper methods of
brushing to remove plaque is for prevention of both cavity formation and
periodontal disease. In the dental office, calculus is removed to prevent
progress of periodontal disease, and sealants may be placed to prevent
cavities from forming. Education in prevention is the most important thing
that happens in a dental office. |
